HISTORY OF THE BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME:
The BCS National Championship Game or BCS title game is the final game of the annual Bowl Championship Series intended by Series organizers to determine the NCAA national football championship. The game was first played at the conclusion of the 1998 College Football season after the Big Ten and Pac 10 conferences and the Rose Bowl Game joined the members of the former "Bowl Alliance" to form the Bowl Championship Series. The Bowl Alliance and its predecessor, the Bowl Coalition, featured championship games from 1992 through 1997.

Prior to the 1998 season, Bowl Alliance and its predecessor, the Bowl Coalition, held a championship game from 1992 through 1997. Yet the winner of the game wasn't assured the national title in either of the two major polls. So in 1998, The Bowl Championship series was formed, as it combined both the AP and Coaches polls. All Division 1-A schools and conferences contractually agreed to the BCS, making it the first "true" national championship". But, in 2003, the AP poll decided to drop itself out of the BCS computer rankings.
