About the 2008 Summer Olympics Games in China:
The Games of the XXIX Olympiad will take place in over 30 venues. Beijing National Stadium, the centerpiece, seats 80,000 people and will be the site for the opening and closing ceremonies. It will also host athletics events and the football finals.

There will be over 30 sports consisting of hundreds of athletic events from gymnastics and basketball to archery and sailing. In addition, nine new events including BMX cycling will debut.

History of the Olympics
The first official Olympic Summer Games was appropriately held in Athens Greece in 1896, as was the last event in 2004. The inaugural games featured 241 participants from 14 nations, while the most recent contest involved 11,100 competitors from 202 countries. The original games can be traced back to Olympia, Greece in 8th century B.C. The most popular legend is that Heracles, son of Zeus and Alcmene, created the Olympic games and built the Olympic stadium and surrounding buildings as a tribute to his father. Since a medal count has been recorded, the United States garnered the most gold medals with 35, followed by China with 32 and Russia with 27. Beijing was elected host city of the 2010 summer games on July 13, 2001. The city that will carry the torch to host the 2014 games has yet to be determined.
