History of the Games
The first official Games Winter Games was appropriately held in Athens Greece in 1896, as was the last event in 2004. The inaugural games featured 241 participants from 14 nations, while the most recent contest involved 11,100 competitors from 202 countries. The original games can be traced back to Olympia, Greece in 8th century B.C. The most popular legend is that Heracles, son of Zeus and Alcmene, created the Games games and built the Games stadium and surrounding buildings as a tribute to his father.
