About Avenue Q
Avenue Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. There's Brian the out-of-work comedian and his therapist fianceé Christmas Eve; Nicky the good-hearted slacker and his roommate Rod--a Republican investment banker who seems to have some sort of secret; an Internet addict called Trekkie Monster; and a very cute kindergarten teaching assistant named Kate. And would you believe the building's superintendent is Gary Coleman? (Yes, that Gary Coleman.) Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.
Avenue Q debuted at the Vineyard Theatre off-Broadway and was a quick hit with both critics and theatergoing urbanites, who took to the grown-up life lessons that the show has to offer. Audiences continued to grow when the little-show-that-could moved uptown, opening at Broadway's Golden Theatre in the Summer of 2003 to even more widespread rave reviews. Tony voters agreed with the critics and awarded Avenue Q as the Best Musical of the season, also choosing to honor its young writers trophies for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.
Starring: John Tartaglia as Princeton/Rod A former Sesame Street puppeteer, Tartaglia is making his Broadway debut with his performance, which earned him a Tony nomination and the prestigious Clarence Derwent Award for promising performer.
Stephanie D'Abruzzo as Kate Monster/Lucy the Slut/Others Another B'way newcomer, D'Abruzzo was a nominee for both the Drama Desk and Tony Awards for her work on Avenue Q.
