The Lead Up to the Summer Games: Top 10 USA Women Gymnasts to watch

Published on: Sep 30 2015 by Leslie Lempka

Artistic Gymnastics, the high intensity sport that involves the balance beam, the uneven bars, vault, and floor exercise for women.  Most Olympic gymnasts train for years and years prior to reaching the pinnacle of this sport, and a trip to the summer games.

Here are the top 10 women who have their eye on a gold medal in Rio.

  1. Simone Biles – won the 2013 US national title, and then two months later took home the world all-around title. In 2014, she defended her national title by an enormous 4-point margin and once again followed that up with a world all-around title.  If you are counting that is two national all-around titles and two world titles.  Look for Simone to be simply unstoppable in Rio.
  2. Maggie Nicols placed 2nd at the 2015 US nationals.   Maggie is a consistent all-around gymnast, performing the difficult vault, called the Amanar, and double-twisting double back during her floor routine, alongside intricate bar combinations.  Maggie is extremely steady with clean skills on the balance beam.  Expect her to do extremely well in Rio.
  3. Gabby Douglas, the 2012 Olympic all-around champion in London has been hard at work getting ready for Rio. Her bar routine can still benefit the US team, and she’s got an exceptional  ability that didn’t seem to hit its max in London.
  4. Kyla Ross, the youngest member of the American women’s Olympic team that won gold in 2012.   She opted to go back into training, and only did a select number of the Olympic tour stops in the fall of 2012, opting instead to head back to training. Ross placed second at both the 2013 and 2014 US nationals, and earned all-around silver and bronze, respectively, at the 2013 and 2014 worlds.
  5. Aly Raisman, another member of the London Summer Games Team, is hard at work on a comeback for Rio.  She will be ready to defend her gold medal on the floor with some new tumbling passes.

Other young gymnasts to watch include: Bailie Key, Laurie Hernandez, Alyssa Baumann, Jazmyn Foberg, and Ragan Smith.
